The Wave Properties of Coronal Bright Fronts Observed Using SDO/AIA
نویسندگان
چکیده
Coronal bright fronts (CBFs) are large scale wavefronts that propagate though the solar corona at hundreds of kilometers per second. While their kinematics have been studied in detail, many questions remain regarding the temporal evolution of their amplitude and pulse width. Here, contemporaneous high cadence, multi-thermal observations of the solar corona from the Solar Dynamic Observatory (SDO) and Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory (STEREO) spacecraft are used to determine the kinematics and expansion rate of a CBF wavefront observed on 2010 August 14. The CBF was found to have a lower initial velocity with weaker deceleration in STEREO observations compared to SDO (∼340 km s−1 and −72 m s−2 as opposed to ∼410 km s−1 and −279 m s−2). The CBF kinematics from SDO were found to be highly passband-dependent, with an initial velocity ranging from 379±12 km s−1 to 460±28 km s−1 and acceleration ranging from −128±28 m s−2 to −431±86 m s−2 in the 335 Å and 304 Å passbands respectively. These kinematics were used to estimate a quiet coronal magnetic field strength range of ∼1–2 G. Significant pulse broadening was also observed, with expansion rates of ∼130 km s−1 (STEREO) and ∼220 km s−1 (SDO). By treating the CBF as a linear superposition of sinusoidal waves within a Gaussian envelope, the resulting dispersion rate of the pulse was found to be ∼8–13 Mm s−1. These results are indicative of a fast-mode magnetoacoustic wave pulse propagating through an inhomogeneous medium. Transversal oscillation of coronal loops that are interpreted as signatures of magneto hydrodynamics (MHD) waves are observed frequently in active region corona loops. The amplitude of this oscillation has been found to be strongly attenuated. The damping of transverse oscillation may be produced by the dissipation mechanism and the wake of the traveling disturbance. The damping of transversal ...

Coronal dimmings in both micro and macro scales, can be observed by extreme ultraviolet images, recorded from Solar Dynamics Observatory or Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (SDO/AIA). Mini-dimmings are sometimes associated with wave-like brightening, called coronal mass ejections. Here, the sun full disk images with 171 Å wavelenght, cadence of 2.5, and 0.6 arcsec cell size, were taken on 3 March ...

Carson King 8/2/17 Title: A Comparison of Coronal Dimming Behavior Between XRT and AIA Data Authors: Carson King, Mark Weber, Patricia Jibben A coronal dimming is an event that takes place in the sun’s atmosphere, in which a patch of bright plasma seemingly disappears leaving a dark spot. These events are often associated with other solar phenomena such as flares and coronal mass ejections. Ove...
متن کاملA Coherence-Based Approach for Tracking Waves in the Solar Corona
We consider the problem of automatically (and robustly) isolating and extracting information about waves and oscillations observed in EUV image sequences of the solar corona with a view to near real-time application to data from the Atmospheric Imaging Array (AIA) on the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). We find that a simple coherence / travel-time based approach detects and provides a wealth ...

In this study, we describe and evaluate shape measures for distinguishing between coronal holes and filament channels as observed in Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) images of the Sun. For a set of well-observed coronal hole and filament channel regions extracted from SDO/AIA 193Å images we analyze their intrinsic morphology during the period 2011 to 2013, by using well known shape measures from the l...
